Kai the handsome bull. The contrast of him in his Kai the handsome bull.
The contrast of him in his dark stall was brilliant for picking up the rich texture of his coat and his remarkably calm demeanour. He was waiting and watching the preparations for the Désalpe, observing as the cows were fitted with their flowers and bells for the descent from the alpages of L’Etivaz and Château-d’Oex. He did get his own flower headband and to join them and walk down with the rest of the herd.

If you are looking for unique, characterful art for your walls, all my images are available as limited edition prints. Send me a message…

Harvest moon over Chateau d’Oex How poignant that Harvest moon over Chateau d’Oex
How poignant that Saturday was the full moon of the autumn equinox, as it was a very special day in Château d’Oex and L’Etivaz, the day of the Desalpe when all the cows adorned with bells and flowers are brought down from the alpages, marking the end of summer.
We rounded the corner in the early evening and were met by this stunning sight!

Moroccan road trip Leaving the deep sands of the S Moroccan road trip
Leaving the deep sands of the Sahara and Merzouga behind and heading into the rugged mountain passes.
There is something incredible about how the landscape changes along this route. One minute you’re surrounded by infinite sand and the next you’re pulling into these massive, imposing canyons where ancient mud-brick villages are completely swallowed up by the clay and stone around them.
The contrast of the dense green palms against the terracotta rock and rugged mountain walls is spectacular.
And then it’s cold and the snow capped Atlas mountains come into view! The road trip continues…

Merzouga, The Sahara, part II. Stepping back into Merzouga, The Sahara, part II.
Stepping back into the dunes, but later in the day.
After that first amazing morning trip, we went back out into the desert for the late afternoon and sunset to watch the camel trains returning. The light was completely different, with much harsher shadows and sharper lines.
Stripping away the intense orange tones of the sand, I decided to edit these in black and white as it forces the eye to look at the scale of the landscape and the graphic shapes of the camel caravan against the horizon.
This was a truly incredible experience.

Merzouga, The Sahara A real pinch me moment. There Merzouga, The Sahara
A real pinch me moment.
There was something quite amazing about standing on a sand dune here before dawn, just waiting for the light. It was the absolute quietness of the desert waking up that really stayed with me. I watched the deep orange colours slowly come alive as the hazy sun hit the ridges, revealing all the shapes and undulations of the dunes. Then, right on cue, these camel trains passed right in front of us. Going out into the desert that early in the morning was just fabulous.

Continuing with images my amazing photo tour in Morocco with @rodneyocallaghan
The Mellah in Marrakech has a different energy to The Mellah in Marrakech has a different energy to the main souks. It’s the old Jewish quarter, a bit more functional and less about the “show” for visitors, which makes it perfect for observing the steady hum of local life. This was a quieter area with narrow alleyways and a lot of ochre and blue!

We wandered through the spice market just watching these interactions, avoiding the odd speeding motorbike delivery and donkey and cart!
I enjoyed the subtlety of trying to capture these candid moments, no posing or staging, just the natural rhythm of daily life.

Deep in the backstreets of Marrakech, well away fr Deep in the backstreets of Marrakech, well away from the usual tourist loops, we found this workshop. It was a chance encounter with a Moroccan artisan to take some environmental portraits during a walking tour through a neighbourhood where daily life carries on at its own steady pace.

This welder was kind enough to let us stay for a few moments as he worked. His small space was a maze of metal scraps, tools and the intricate lanterns the city is known for. I liked the contrast between the dark workshop behind and the sudden, brilliant blue flare of his torch that lit up his face as he worked. I felt his face and eyes conveyed patience and kindness.
There is a quiet, rhythmic pride in craftsmanship like this, tucked away in a small garage/workshop off a side street.

Farnatchi are the traditional ovens found below the streets of Marrakech, heating the pipes that transport the water and steam the hammams.

In additional these fires have another very important use. This is to slow cook the classic dish Tangia, named after the clay pot it is cooked in, in the embers of the fire. This traditional recipe is a meaty dish, usually made by the men.

Same image, two different crops, which do you think works best?
